Matthaeus to coach Israel's Maccabi Netanya

Former Germany captain Lothar Matthaeus has been appointed coach of Israeli first division side Maccabi Netanya, the club said Saturday. ( dpa )

Andreas Stamatiou, the club's head of finance, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa 47-year-old Matthaeus had signed a two-year contract and will begin work in mid-June.

Maccabi Netanya are second in the Israeli league and have been owned since 2006 by the German businessman Daniel Jammer.

Matthaeus has had several coaching roles since retiring in 2001, including the Hungarian national side, Austrian team Rapid Vienna, Serbia's Partizan Belgrade and most recently as co-trainer in Salzburg.
