Foreign Secretary David Miliband, speaking after talks in London with his Turkish counterpart Ali Babacan, said relations between Turkey and Britain were "closer than ever before" at political, economic and cultural level.

"Bilateral relations are deep, excellent and sincerely felt," said Miliband, adding that London "applauded" the progress made under the Turkish government's reform programme.

Turkey had a pivotal role to play on regional issues, such as the conflict in Iraq and concern over Iran's nuclear programme, Miliband said.

Both men had also discussed the situation in Afghanistan and expressed their commitment to stability and democracy in Pakistan, he said.

Queen Elizabeth II is scheduled to pay a state visit to Turkey in May.
