(dpa) - Helmut Kohl, 78, the former German chancellor is to marry his female companion, Maike Richter, 43, soon, the head of Kohl's Berlin office, Ulrich Pohlmann, said Tuesday.

Kohl, a widower, confirmed in April 2005 that he was living with Richter, who is an economist at the Economics Ministry in Berlin.

Their relationship was made public four years after the death of Kohl's reclusive wife Hannelore.

Kohl, who was voted out of office in 1998, led Germany to unification in 1990 after delicate negotiations with the Soviet Union and oversaw the dismantling of the communist system in the East with most of the economy being returned to private hands.

Pohlmann declined to say when the marriage would take place, saying this was private.

He said Kohl was currently in a physiotherapy clinic, recovering from the effects of a fall in his home in Ludwigshafen, western Germany.

The mass-circulation newspaper Bild said Tuesday the accident happened in February and Kohl had suffered concussion.

It added that he underwent immediate surgery when he was delivered to University Hospital, Heidelberg, and was discharged into post- hospital therapy two weeks later.

Bild said he had informed his family and close friends about his intention to remarry.
