UN chief calls for restraint in Gaza
( Xinhua ) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon reiterated on Wednesday his persistent position on conflicts in Middle East, calling for restraint to refrain from further violence.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ban said he is gravely concerned at the escalation of violence in Gaza and southern Israel.
He condemned the actions which caused reported civilian casualties among Palestinians, including children, during Israeli military operations, and called on Israel to abide by its obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights law.
The Secretary-General also reiterated his condemnation of rocket fire against Israeli civilian targets, and urged all parties to exercise restraint.
It is reported that eighteen Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers were killed on Wednesday in a whole day of mutual Israeli and Palestinian attacks in several Gaza Strip areas.
