Egyptian police shot and seriously wounded Sunday two African nationals while they were trying to cross the border illegally into Israel, police sources said. ( dpa )

A man from Mali and another from Kenya, both in their 20s, were shot by Egyptian border guard while they were trying to sneak into Israel, the sources said.

Both men, with one suffering a head injury and the other thigh and abdomen injuries, are in serious condition in Arish hospital, medical sources said.

Incidents of shooting illegal migrants, mainly Africans, on the Egyptian-Israeli border have frequently occurred in recent months.

At least 11 migrants have been shot dead by Egyptian border police since January.

The border area has become a major route for economic migrants seeking to illegally enter Israel to look for work or seek asylum.

Local human traffickers are believed to charge migrants up to 5,000 dollars each to facilitate their illegal journey across the desert border.
