The club has refused to confirm the appointment of Rutten, saying a press conference will be held Wednesday morning to be attended by club chairman Josef Schnusenberg and general manager Andreas Mueller.
According to German media report, Schalke have lined up 45-year-old Rutten, presently with Dutch side Twente Enschede, for next season.
Schalke, third in the Bundesliga, have put former players Mike Bueskens and Youri Mulder in charge of the team for the rest of the season.
