A shark attacked and killed a swimmer Friday morning in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego County, authorities said, dpa reported.

The man, aged between 55 and 60 years old was participating in a triathlete training swim at around 7 am when he was attacked, according to a statement on the Solana Beach city Web site.

Swimmers were ordered out of the water in a 30-kilometer area around the attack site and the county Sheriff's Department sent up helicopters to scan the waters for the shark.

The incident occurred in the ocean some 25 kilometers northwest of San Diego. Shark attacks are reportedly rare in this area.
