At least nine people were injured Sunday when intense clashes between the supporters of Lebanon's majority and the Shiite Hezbollah-led opposition broke out in Tripoli, security sources and witnesses said. ( dpa )

The clashes occurred in the Bab al-Tebana district, a Sunni area some 80 kilometres north of Beirut, sources told Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa.

Security conditions are fragile there as the Lebanese army had threatened to withdraw from areas where clashes still occur, witnesses said.

The clashes came as Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora intensifies his efforts to form a national unity government, in the wake of a long-running political standoff.

Lebanon was on the brink of civil war, when similar clashes occurred before a deal was sealed in Qatar to elect a new Lebanese president in May.
