At least seven workers were killed and another seriously injured when a crane collapsed Tuesday at a port in northern Vietnam, reported dpa.

The accident happened when the workers of the Vietnam Machinery Installation Corporation were erecting a container crane at Cai Lan Port near the world heritage Ha Long Bay, 150 kilometres east of the capital Hanoi, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

The crane was one of two being installed at the port to replace two others damaged in a November 2006 storm. The cranes, imported from China, were scheduled to be operational from August this year, the agency said.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. dpa hmc mga
