A total of 1,111 New Zealand mothers set a new record by breastfeeding their babies simultaneously on Friday at 130 venues throughout the country, the Women's Health Action Trust said, dpa reported.

The so-called Big Latch On, which topped last year's 937 turnout, took place at cafes, libraries, hospitals and clinics to mark the start of World Breastfeeding Week.

Trust spokeswoman Louise James, said, "It was a tremendous success, showing that mothers are feeling more supported breastfeeding in public."
