At least 40 Hindu worshippers were feared dead and dozens injured in a stampede at a shrine in India's northern state of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday, a media report said. ( dpa )

The stampede occurred at the Naina Devi temple in Bilaspur, which lies some 320 kilometres north of national capital New Delhi, the NDTV network reported.

The report said police officials had confirmed the deaths of at least seven devotees as large crowds had thronged the temple to offer prayers.

Temple stampedes are not uncommon in India where huge crowds gather to pray on auspicious days at complexes where the approach roads and entrances are usually narrow.
