A career criminal's plea to be caned instead of spending at least seven years in prison has been denied, news reports said Friday. ( dpa )

The district court could not grant Murugaian Kandasamy his request because he is 50. The law stipulates that convicts 50 and over cannot be whipped, The Straits Times said.

Murugaian was convicted of robbing two maids earlier this year.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Sharmila Sripathy asked for preventive detection, which protects the public from the menace of a defendant who has a long history of criminal convictions and poses a safety risk to others.

Murugaian has been convicted 20 times in the last 35 years on counts including burglary, robbery with hurt and drug offences, the report said. He committed his first offence when he was 15.

Judge Jasbendar Kaur postponed sentencing to September 10.
