One person died and 39 were injured in a motorway pile-up in eastern France, when more than two dozen vehicles including two tour buses collided near the town of Moselle in heavy fog on Sunday, dpa reported.

Local authorities said that a 72-year old French man died in the accident, while others sustained heavy injuries.

The tour buses were carrying tourists from Belgium and Britain.

Bad visibility due to fog was worsened due to fumes from a straw- fire nearby, authorities said.

More than 230 rescue vehicles attended the accident.
