Rescue officials say a tropical storm has lashed Bangladesh's coast, killing at least 15 people and injuring at least 200, the Associated Press reported.

Officials say the storm, spawned by a depression in the Bay of Bengal, struck late Monday inundating hundreds of villages, leveling several thousand mostly mud-straw huts and knocking off electricity poles, officials said.

The officials spoke Tuesday on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to talk to the media.

They say at least 10 bodies were recovered Tuesday from the rubble of collapsed houses in Biracial district, a hard-hit area 120 kilometers ( 75 miles) south of capital Dhaka. Another five people drowned in neighboring Patuakhali district.

Officials said at least 200 villagers were injured.
