A U.S.-registered plane is missing in the Amazon jungles of Guyana after taking off to conduct aerial surveys for a Canadian mining company. Three people are on board, the Associated Press reported.

Authorities say they hope to find survivors.

The aircraft was doing uranium survey work for Prometheus Resources Guyana Inc., a subsidiary of U308 Corporation of Toronto, Canada. It was flying over rugged terrain in western Guyana near Venezuela on Saturday when it went missing.

Guyana civil aviation director Zulfikar Mohamed says a search and rescue operation led by the military is planned for Sunday.

The occupants of the plane were not identified.
