The U.N. has announced that a Senegalese general who commanded the 17,000-strong U.N. peacekeeping force in restive Congo until October will take charge again following the sudden resignation of his successor after just seven weeks on the job, the Associated Press reported.

Lt. Gen. Babacar Gaye will serve as commander of the U.N. force for up to six months to give Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon time to find a replacement for Lt. Gen. Vincente Diaz de Villegas of Spain who resigned last week for personal reasons, U.N. spokeswoman Michele Montas said.

Gaye will return to the job amid worsening violence in eastern Congo, where an uneasy unilateral cease-fire

declared last week by rebel leader Laurent Nkunda appeared to be holding.
