A woman and her two children were found dead in a suspected murder-suicide, Hong Kong police said Friday, dpa reported.

The 42-year-old woman had a rope around her neck while her daughter, 13, and son, 17, showed signs of strangulation.

Police said the woman had been receiving treatment for mental illness and had only just been released from hospital where she was treated for depression.

The three bodies were discovered Thursday by the sister of the dead woman who had gone to their 14th-floor apartment to deliver food.

A police spokesman said autopsies would be conducted Friday.

The hospital that released the woman from psychiatric care has promised to review all aspects of the case and the decisions that led to her release 24 hours before the suspected murder-suicide took place.

The case has shocked Hong Kong which has seen a growing number of murder-suicides involving children.

A study by the University of Hong Kong and University of Macau, which looked at the motives of the killers in Hong Kong cases spanning the past two decades, claimed the killers acted out of a deluded sense of kindness, persuading themselves they are acting out of love.
