Spanish Liga club Almeria announced at midnight Monday the sacking of coach Gonzalo Arconada, dpa reported.

Club president Alfonso Garcia made the announcement five hours after Sunday's 1-0 defeat away to Sporting Gijon, which leaves Almeria fifth from bottom, with 16 points from 16 games.

According to the digital version of Marca, the favourite to replace Arconada is former Mallorca and Betis boss Hector Cuper.

Arconada - brother of 1980s Spain goalkeeper Luis Maria Arconada - took over at Almeria in July, replacing the Valencia-bound Unai Emery, who had left the club in eighth place, their highest ever final position.

Arconada is the fifth Liga coach to be sacked this season, after Manolo Zambrano (Recreativo Huelva), Jose Angel Ziganda (Osasuna), Bartolome Marquez (Espanyol) and Bernd Schuster (Real Madrid).
