An earthquake with a magnitude of at least 7 on the Richter scale shook the northern portion of Indonesia's Sulawesi island on Wednesday.
The quake at a depth of 35 kilometres near the Talaud islands between Sulawesi and the southern Philippines occurred at 1734 GMT, the US Geological Survey said.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said no major tsunamis were expected but that such waves were possible within 100 kilometres of the epicentre. It said the quake had a magnitude of 7.4, dpa reported.
