Taiwan police on Sunday arrested an alleged American paedophile facing charges in the United States for molesting children at a nursery in California, dpa reported.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) arrested Mark Lee Kaczmarczyk, 58, in Taipei Sunday at the request of the Federal Investigation Bureau (FBI) and the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). The CIB plans to deport him to the United States.

"We will detain Kaczmarczyk until the FBI has made arrangements to extradite him. We have told him his rights, and two AIT representatives have also visited him and told him of his rights," Ma Chen-hua, head of CIB's International Criminal Police Organization, told reporters.

Kaczmarczyk and his wife previously operated a day care centre for children and infants in California. He faces seven charges of molesting the children at the centre in 2007.

Kaczmarczyk was indicted by California High Court in 2008, and was freed on a 2-million-dollar bond. But he jumped bail and fled to Taiwan on January 8.

After being questioned at the CIB, Kaczmarczyk was transferred to the Sanhsia Foreigners' Detention Centre outside Taipei to await deportation to the United States.
