An avalanche swept away three people Wednesday near the southern German town of Oberammergau on Wednesday and one victim died before help arrived, German police said, dpa reported.

The other two skiing on 1,686-metre Mount Laber were rescued by mountain rescue teams and helicopters. Heavy snow in the Alps has led to frequent slips all this week as well as road closures, and prompted warnings to skiers to stay away from unstable slopes.
