Mexican judicial authorities on Friday handed down a prison sentence to one of the main leaders of the Golfo drug cartel, Xinhua reported.

The hit squad of the cartel "Los Zetas" is the most violent and dangerous group of organized crime in the country, official sources said.

The General Prosecutor of the Republic's Office (PGR) said in a communique that Javier Diaz Ramon alias "El Java" was charged with organized crime and drug trafficking.

Diaz was detained on Dec. 23, 2008 at Veracruz port, in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched a campaign against violence linked to powerful feuding drug cartels when he took office more than two years ago.
