Eight miners died and 22 others went missing Monday in Peru when a mudslide fell on a miners' camp in the Andean Peruvian region of Puno.

The authorities said the mudslide caused by heavy rains happened on Monday morning and buried about 50 homes at a camp belonging to the mining company Huichimayo, some 1,300 kilometres southeast of Peruvian capital Lima, on the Bolivian border.

Huichimayo manager Carlos Roncal said eight men were found dead, while rescue teams were searching for a further 22 missing.

In February, eight miners died in two accidents in the mountains near Lima, dpa reported.
