A Malaysian man foiled his own attempted burglary when he left a trail of engine oil from a farm where he stole two generator sets back to his home, a news report said Tuesday.

The man was believed to have broken into the farm in the southern state of Johor early Sunday, and drove off with the generators, the Star daily said.

Farm owner Chia Kok Guan said workers found a trail of black oil on the dirt road, and followed it to a house located about 1 kilometre away, dpa reported.

Police arrived at the vacant house several hours later to find the stolen generators, the report said.

Police said a search has been launched for the blundering thief.
