Zimbabwe Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai left for neiboring Botswana for medical treatment on Saturday after he was released from the hospital following a horrible car crash that killed his wife Susan, local media reported.
A spokesman for Tsvangirai's Movement for Democratic Change ( MDC) said he will undergo a check-up, but he is out of danger now.
Doctors attending to Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai in Avenue Clinic in Harare said they are satisfied with Tsvangirai's recovery process.
The crash happened as Tsvangirai and his wife were travelling from Harare to Buhera, their rural hometown where the new prime minister was due to attend a rally on Saturday. Susan died at the scene of the accident.
Susan was reportedly flung out of the car as it rolled over and landed on top of her. Rescuers found her 15 metres from the wrecked vehicle, mortally wounded with serious internal injuries and fractures to both legs.
She was rushed to Beatrice hospital where she was confirmed dead on arrival. Her body is now at Nyaradzo funeral parlour, in Herbert Chitepo road Harare.
Tsvangirai's driver Simbarashe Mujeyi and his aide Benson Muchineuta were also injured and treated at the Avenues Clinic in Harare.
Party Secretary General Tendai Biti, who is also Finance Minister, told a news conference on Saturday that a horrific accident in which Tsvangirai's wife
Susan was killed and he sustained serious injuries could have been avoided if he had been travelling under police escort.
"The accident could have been avoided if he had a police escort as it would have warned other vehicles that there was a VIP coming and they would have stopped," he said.
"We hope that this will be rectified and the Prime Minister is accorded an escort," he added.
Biti noted that Tsvangirai was being driven by a CMED-certified driver, adding police were investigating the cause of the accident.
He said in addition to investigations the police were carrying out, the party was also conducting its own and would announce the results soon.
Biti declined to comment on reports that Tsvangirai"s vehicle collided with a truck belonging to USAID, saying doing so would pre-empt investigations.
