Moderate earthquake shakes northern Venezuela

An earthquake measuring 4.3 degrees on the Richter scale shook northern Venezuela Sunday afternoon and the capital city Caracas has declared a state of alert, Xinhua reported.

The quake occurred at 15:54 local time (2024 GMT) and its epicenter was located in the northwest of Guaira, capital of Vargas state, 32 km north of Caracas, said Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma.

Five municipalities in the metropolitan area of Caracas and the states of Vargas, Miranda and Aragua in the north of the country were affected.
The situation in the areas is now stable, according to local officials.
