Afghan National Police in a cleanup operation Thursday detained a local Taliban commander in relatively peaceful Badakhshan province of northeastern Afghanistan, provincial police chief said, Xinhua reported.

"The aim of the operation, which began in the wee hours Thursday morning, was to arrest Taliban militants in Warduge district, as a result, the Taliban local commander Malawi Abdul Rizaq was arrested," Aqah Noor Qintoz told Xinhua.

He also added that the operation has concluded and no police or civilians were injured.

Taliban militants whose regime was toppled in the U.S.-led invasion in 2001 have vowed to launch a spring offensive against Afghan and international troops stationed in Afghanistan and trying to have influence in relatively peaceful northern provinces of the central Asian state.
