A British Army soldier killed while on foot patrol in Afghanistan was named by the Ministry of Defence on Sunday as Fusilier Petero "Pat" Suesue, Reuters reported.

The 28-year-old Fijian from 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers died on Friday after he was shot near Sangin in Helmand Province.

No one else was injured in the incident, which brought to 160 the number of British army soldiers killed in Afghanistan since conflict began in late 2001.

Suesue was born in Levuka in Fiji and joined the British Army in 2002, marrying his wife Emalaini in 2006.

"Petero epitomised the qualities of the Fijian Fusilier," his family said. "He was strong yet gentle, compassionate and always willing to support those around him."

Britain has more than 8,000 troops based in Afghanistan, the vast majority serving in Helmand, a desert province that remains a heartland of Taliban-led insurgency.
