A British soldier has been killed in an explosion in southwest Afghanistan, Xinhua reported.

The soldier from the first Battalion Welsh Guards died on Friday morning during a routine patrol in central Helmand province, Sky news reported on Saturday.

The soldier's death takes the death toll of British service personnel in Afghanistan to 169 since operations began in October 2001.

Richard Blanchette, spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force led by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), said the death was the result of an improvised explosive device strike.
