A fire at a Texas chemical plant north of Houston that caused thousands of residents to be evacuated on Thursday has been extinguished, local news media reported, according to Reuters.
A fire at the El Dorado Chemical Co, which processes explosive ammonium nitrate into fertilizer, sent plumes of smoke into the air and spurred officials to order an evacuation from Bryan, Texas, the KHOU television station reported.
There were no reported casualties but about 22 emergency workers were being treated in hospital for respiratory problems, KHOU reported.
The campus of Texas A&M University in nearby College Station was closed due to the fire, which broke out around noon.
Officials said residents who live more than two miles (3.2 km) away from the factory can now return home, KHOU reported.
Bryan is home to 70,000 residents but local officials said they could not estimate how many had evacuated due to the fire, it reported.
