A car collided with a school bus in Sydney's south on Friday, killing two adults and injuring 41 children on board the bus, Xinhua reported.

The female passenger in the silver hatchback car involved, who the New South Wales (NSW) Ambulance Service said was in her 40s or 50s, died from her injuries at St George Hospital on Friday afternoon.

The male driver of the car, believed to be about 50 years old, died at the scene of the accident, which happened on Heathcote Road at Lucas Heights.

NSW Ambulance Service district manager John Millevoi said all of the 41 children on board the bus had been taken to five local hospitals with varying injuries.

The two most seriously injured children were airlifted to Westmead Children's Hospital and are described as being in a serious condition.

Millevoi said children had to climb out of the windows of the bus after it came to rest against a rock cliff face.

He told reporters that Heathcote Road had been the scene of a number of car crashes.
