The Pakistani military says its troops have killed 33 pro-Taliban militants in the ongoing offensive in the South Waziristan tribal area, Press TV reported.

The latest clashes bring the death toll to 297 insurgents killed since the operation was launched in the mountainous terrain on October 17.

Military sources said four soldiers were also injured in battles over the past 24 hours.

In addition, more than 31 Pakistani soldiers have been killed over the past two weeks.

Nearly 30,000 army soldiers have been deployed to fight against the insurgents based in the northwestern tribal area that borders Afghanistan.

The Pakistani army is now besieging Sararogha after days of intense fighting in the area.

The town is considered to be an important base for the militants and the "operational center" of the banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), according to a Press TV correspondent in Pakistan.

In a separate development on Saturday, over a dozen insurgents were killed when warplanes attacked suspected militant hideouts in the nearby Orakzai district.

Thousands have been killed in the bloody campaign across Pakistan over the past two years, and the death toll is expected to rise during the government offensive.
