At least nine schoolchildren and four teachers were killed when the van they were travelling in plunged into a pond in Nagapattinam in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadi Thursday, a senior police official said.

At least nine schoolchildren and four teachers were killed when the van they were travelling in plunged into a pond in Nagapattinam in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadi Thursday, a senior police official said, Xinhua reported.
  
"The nine school children and their teacher drowned while 11 others were rescued after the mishap which took place as the driver of the vehicle lost control and fell into the Kamakshi Amman temple tank at Kariapattinam Villigam village," the official said.
  
The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their parents and relatives while those injured were admitted to the Vedaranyam general hospital and other private hospitals, he said.
