A suicide bomber detonated his explosives at a club for journalists in Pakistan's north-western city of Peshawar on Tuesday, killing at least two people, police and witnesses said, DPA reported.

Peshawar police chief Liaquat Ali Khan told reporters that the attacker blew himself up when he was intercepted by a police guard deployed at the gates of the Peshawar Press Club.

"The (police) constable and another man have been confirmed killed," Khan said. At least four injured people have been moved to the hospital, he added.

Television footage showed the heavily damaged guardroom of the club, with its walls bearing the marks of ball bearings that were packed by the suicide bomber in his explosives vest.

A witness told the Duniya News television channel that the attacker was short and appeared to be quite young. He had a shawl wrapped around himself.

Islamist militants have carried out a series of attacks in the city, the capital of the troubled North-West Frontier Province, in recent weeks to avenge military operations against the Taliban in the region.

Mian Iftikhar Hussain, the provincial information minister, said on Tuesday that journalists were facing threats for supporting the government in the "jihad," or holy war, against the militants.

"We have to take offensive measures rather than defensive ones, and hit these terrorists wherever they are," Hussain said.
