Two passengers were killed and 47 injured in a late-night bus crash in south-western England, police reported Wednesday morning, DPA reported.

Police said the bus veered out of control on an icy road near Townshend in the Cornwall region late Tuesday night, toppling onto its side and then smashing into a tree before sliding down an embankment.

One woman died at the scene, and another died while being transported to hospital. Six further passengers were listed in critical condition.

A police car arriving at the accident scene itself slid out of control and smashed into the bus. Follow-up ambulance vehicles were then directed to pull up at a safe distance, with rescue workers having to walk a few hundred metres to the accident scene.
