Australian couples rush for bargain IVF babies

Australian couples keen for the baby that natural methods of conception have so far denied them were Saturday besieging fertility clinics to get IVF treatments before the price goes up at the end of the week, dpa reported.

Government subsidies for In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatments are being slashed from January 1, so rather than join those flocking to Boxing Day sales to save money, the childless are queuing at fertility clinics to book bargain-basement treatments.

Sydney IVF medical director Mark Bowman said his clinic was a busy as a pre-Christmas toy shop.

"People are telling you they want to get in before January because they don't want to be out of pocket," Bowman told the Daily Telegraph.
