Two French journalists who went missing in Afghanistan have been seized by insurgents, the internet site of the television broadcaster France 3 reported Saturday.

The two reporters were kidnapped on Wednesday while they were on their way to a filming assignment, the report said.

According to France 3, the two were being well-treated. But the fate of their three Afghan escorts remained unknown, DPA reported.

The journalists were in Afghanistan to produce a report on a road construction project.

The kidnapping, some 120 kilometres north-east of the capital Kabul, was believed to have been carried out by Taliban fighters.

So far, the French Foreign Ministry has only confirmed that there was no contact with the two journalists.
