Sixteen people were killed and 28 others injured when a fully loaded truck they were traveling on overturned early Tuesday in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, said police.

Sixteen people were killed and 28 others injured when a fully loaded truck they were traveling on overturned early Tuesday in the western Indian state of Maharashtra, said police, Xinhua reported.
  
The dead, including five women and six children, were mostly laborers from the neighboring state of Karnataka who were traveling in the truck which overturned on a highway near Sholapur of Maharashtra at 01:30 a.m. local time, after the driver lost control, said police.
  
Most of them were crushed to death by the huge grain bags loaded on the truck, said police.
  
Local villagers rushed to the scene of the accident and sent the injured to hospital. The condition of many of the injured is critical and death toll could rise, police said.
  
Police are hunting for the driver who survived in the accident and is on the run.
  
Road accident rate in India is among the highest in the world, with at least 100,000 killed every year, according to official estimates.
