The Japanese government is considering dispatching troops to join the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Haiti, where the 7.0-magnitude earthquake devastated the capital city, DPA reported.
The UN Security Council voted last week to send 3,500 extra troops to Haiti, boosting the the number of personnel for the United Nations Stabilization Mission to more than 12,000.
The UN decision prompted Japan to consider contributing to the mission, news reports said. The government could send 100 to 200 members of the Ground Self-Defense Force engineering unit to rebuild critical infrastructure such as schools and roads, Kyodo News reported.
