The mother of Chinese premier Wen Jiabao suffered a cerebral hemorrhage when she saw a German student throw a shoe at him on a visit to Britain, news reports said Tuesday.

Watching on television, the 89-year-old was shocked to see postgraduate student Martin Jahnke throw a sports shoe at Wen during a talk at Cambridge University in February 2009, dpa reported.

"She still has difficulties walking" after the hemorrhage, Wen said during an online chat Saturday, the daily China Post reported. The premier added that his mother's vision is also impaired.

A court acquitted Jahnke in June of charges of disturbing the peace and making violent threats. Wen had appealed for clemency towards his attacker days after the shoe incident.

Jahnke was apparently inspired by an Iraqi television journalist who threw a shoe at then-US-president George W Bush during a visit to Iraq in December 2008.
