European champions Spain scored a prestigious 2-0 win away to France on Wednesday, in a high profile friendly in Saint- Denis, dpa reported.

It was Spain's first win in France since 1968, and came thanks to first-half goals from David Villa and Sergio Ramos.

Spain manager Vicente del Bosque said that it was a "handsome victory," but that there were "good and bad things coming out of this" - without going into details.

Left-back Alvaro Arbeloa, for his part, said that "we played very well in the first half, and are looking quite good as a team."

Spain looked solid in attack, fluent in midfield and lively in attack, whilst the hosts seemed incoherent and unsure of themselves.

The win confirms "La Roja" as one of the favourites to win the World Cup in South Africa, at the same time as it increases the pressure on unpopular French manager Raymond Domenech.

Spain manager Vicente del Bosque raised eyebrows by leaving playmaker Xavi out of his starting lineup - and by starting with Villa alone up front, with Fernando Torres on the bench.

Villa opened the scoring in the 22 minute with a calm near-post shot, after being played through by the exquisite Andres Iniesta.

It was Villa's 36th international goal and leaves him second in Spain's all-time scoring chart, behind veteran Raul of Real Madrid.

The goal damaged France's brittle self-confidence, and the large crowd in the Stade de France became critical of their own players.

In injury-time at the end of the first half right-back Sergio Ramos made it 2-0 for the visitors. He received the ball out on the right from Xabi Alonso, cut inside and shot with his left foot. The ball deflected off Sevilla defender Julien Escude and went in.

Spain relaxed in the second half and allowed France to belatedly dominate.

12 minutes from time Djibril Cisse crossed the right for Florent Malouda, whose powerful header hit Iker Casillas' post.
