Dutch anti-Islam party makes gains ahead of national vote

The Dutch right-wing party headed by controversial Islam-critic Geert Wilders has made key gains in local elections, ahead of a national poll in June, DPA reported.

Early results from Wednesday's local elections showed that the Freedom Party (PVV) had become the largest party in Almere, a city east of Amsterdam, and the second largest party in The Hague.

The PVV is opposed to what it sees as the Islamisation of the Netherlands.

Wilders vowed that the local results would carry into the national polls.

"What is possible in Almere and The Hague is possible on a national level too. It is a springboard for our victory," he said.

Wilders said that if the Muslim population of Almere "abide by the law, they are equal to everyone else and have no reason to fear anything."

General elections are set for June 9, after the coalition government collapsed on February 20 over a row over the Netherlands' military involvement in Afghanistan.
