Tourist seriously injured, two dead after giant waves hit ship

One person remained in very serious condition Thursday at a Spanish hospital, after eight-metre waves hit a cruise ship off eastern Spain, killing two of the passengers on board, hospital sources said in Barcelona, DPA reported.

Greek officials said huge waves crashed into the Cypriot-owned cruise ship carrying more than 2,000 passengers and crew on Wednesday.

Three gigantic waves hit the fifth deck of Maltese-flagged Louis Majesty, shattering windows and inundating rooms, according to Spanish media.

Germany's Foreign Ministry said one of the two dead on the Louis Majesty was a 69-year-old German man. Italy earlier confirmed that the other fatality was Italian. About 20 people were reported injured.

The ship, which was en route from Cartagena in Spain to Genoa in Italy, made a stopover in Barcelona to disembark the injured and the bodies.

At least one other person remained in hospital on Thursday. A 64- year-old woman whose nationality was not known, was in very serious condition.

Most of the passengers on board the Louis Majesty, which has been operating since 1992, were Italians, Germans, Spaniards and French citizens, the Barcelona daily La Vanguardia said.

The ship was on a 12-day cruise through the Moroccan coast, the Canary Islands and the Spanish Mediterranean coast.

The ship remained moored in Barcelona for repairs.
