New Zealand wife accidentally runs over husband twice

A New Zealand man was recovering in hospital Friday after his wife unwittingly ran over him twice in their four-wheel-drive vehicle in the drive of their home, a newspaper reported, dpa reported.

Terry Telford, 69, was run over Thursday as his wife, Sandy, reversed down the long drive of their rural property near Opoutama, on the east coast of the North Island.

Not realising what had happened, she then drove forward, running over her husband again and causing moderate head, chest and back injuries, the Dominion Post reported.

"His wife was distraught and we have not interviewed her yet," Police Sergeant Tony Bates told the paper. "We are treating it as an accident."

He said that thick gravel on the drive may have reduced the impact, helping the man survive.
