Twenty-six people were killed Monday when their bus fell off a bridge into a dry river bed in the north-western Indian state of Rajasthan, news reports said.

The bus, carrying around 60 passengers, careened off the bridge after hitting a stationary vehicle, and fell into the river bed off a highway in Sawai-Madhopur district, about 162 kilometres south-west of state capital Jaipur, IANS and PTI news agencies reported.

There were 11 women among the dead. At least 34 people were injured and were being treated at nearby hospitals, IANS quoted local police official Vikas Kumar as saying, DPA reported.

The bus was carrying students and staff from a teacher training college back to Khanpur town in Jhalawar district after a trip to the Hindu pilgrimage spots of Mathura and Vrindavan.

Kumar said rescue operations were continuing.
