Three thieves who stole Auschwitz sign sentenced

A Polish court has sentenced to prison three of the men who stole the "Arbeit macht frei" (work makes you free) sign from the Auschwitz concentration camp, the Polish Press Agency PAP reported Thursday.

The men received sentences of between 18 months and two-and-a-half years. They had confessed to stealing the sign during interrogation after being arrested by police, DPA reported.

Two other men are still waiting for their trial to go ahead. They were said to have established contact with the Swedish alleged mastermind of the plot, 35-year-old former neo-Nazi leader Anders Hogstrom.

The Polish court wants to delay their trial until Hogstrom has been extradited to Poland.

A Swedish court approved the extradition order last week.

Hogstrom has been remanded in custody since mid-February after a Polish request for his detention. Polish TV station TVN24 reported that he had appealed against the order.

The sign, which was stolen shortly before Christmas, was found a few days later after having been sawed into three parts and buried in a wood.

Two of the five Polish men arrested said that Hogstrom had commissioned them to do the job.

More than a million people were murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz and neighbouring concentration camp Birkenau between 1940 and 1945. Most of the victims were Jewish.
