Villa hits hat-trick as Valencia advance; Fulham stun Juventus

David Villa scored a hat-trick as Valencia eliminated Werder Bremen in an eight-goal thriller to advance to the quarter-finals of football's Europa League on Thursday, dpa reported.

They were joined by English side Fulham who stunned Italian giants Juventus 4-1 to overturn a 3-1 defeat in the first leg.

Belgian side Standard Liege completed a 4-1 aggregate win over Greek oufit Panathinaikos after a 1-0 home win, while Benfica advanced thanks to a 2-1 win at Olympique Marseille for a 3-2 victory on aggregate.

Valencia booked their place in the last eight thanks to a 4-4 draw in Bremen for a 5-5 aggregate, with the Spanish side going through on the away goals rule.

Villa struck in the second minute and shortly before half-time, either side of a 15th-minute goal from Juan Manuel Mata - with all the goals set up by David Silva.

Bremen fought back from 3-1 down at the break to level, but Villa then struck on a counter attack when he took a pass from Mata and belted the ball past Tim Wiese in goal in the 65th minute.

Hugo Almeida had put Bremen back in the game in the 26th minute but Villa's left-foot strike just before the interval after a well-worked move and neat work from Silva on the touchline had left the Germans with an uphill task.

Torsten Frings then converted a penalty and Marko Marin levelled at 3-3 in the 62nd minute after a cleverly worked free-kick as Bremen came out after the break with all guns blazing.

Villa's fourth for Valencia just three minutes later appeared to clinch it but Claudio Pizarro set up a tense closing spell with a header six minutes from time to make it 4-4.

In London, David Trezeguet put Juventus ahead in the second minute at Craven Cottage to increase the Italians' advantage over Fulham after their 3-1 first-leg win.

Bobby Zamora soon put Roy Hodgson's side level and Juve's night took a turn for the worse when Fabio Cannavaro was sent off for a foul as last man on Zoltan Gera.

Gera then made it 2-1 and levelled the tie 4-4 on aggregrate shortly after the break when he converted a penalty after a handball offence by Diego.

With three minutes remaining, Clint Dempsey hit a fourth for Fulham to send Juventus crashing out, the Italians ending the match with nine men when Jonathan Zebina was sent off for a foul on Damien Duff in stoppage time.
