A British man was fined 10,000 Singapore dollars (7,150 US dollars) on Tuesday for hurting a US Marine in a street fight, The Straits Times newspaper reported.

Jonathan Graham Thomson Irving, 24, pleaded guilty to an amended charge of punching Clayton Sharrard, 21, in the face in Singapore's Orchard Road shopping district on July 4, DPA reported.

The District Court heard that a dispute broke out between the two men and Irving punched Sharrard, knocking him down the stairs to the pavement, causing multiple fractures.

Defence counsel Christopher de Souza pleaded for leniency with Judge Lee Poh Choo, saying Irving had lost his job as a mechanical systems designer for oil rigs due to the incident.

Irving had faced a maximum jail sentence of six years for the offence.
