A bus carrying 20 passengers fell into a river on Thursday morning in northwest Pakistan, killing 12 people including two women, injuring eight others, local media reported.

The bus fell into a river at Upper Dir, a district in northwest Pakistan while on the way from Peshawar, the capital of Khyber- Pakhtunkhwa province to Chitral, a tourist destination in the province, Xinhua reported.

The accident happened due to the overspeeding of the bus, the private TV AAJ quoted police sources as saying. The driver could not control the balance on the narrow road near the Lowari tunnel and fell into the river.

The death toll could rise as some of the injured were reportedly in critical conditions.

The rescue operation is being carried out and the injured were moved to the District Headquarters Hospital. The hospital sources confirmed arrival of 12 dead bodies and the injured.

The Lowari tunnel is the only main artery that connects northwest Pakistan with the northern areas of the country.
