Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit met on Saturday Iraqi ambassador Nezar Eissa al-Kheirallah, the first Iraqi top envoy to Egypt in about 20 years, Xinhua reported.
Egypt's Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki said in a statement that Abul Gheit welcomed the new Iraqi envoy and received a copy of credentials from him.
The spokesman stressed bilateral cooperation and implementation of the signed treaties between the two countries in all fields.
The Egyptian foreign minister said Egypt "is closely watching the situation in Iraq and is concerned about the negative effects of foreign intervention in Iraqi affairs."
There had been reportedly no Iraqi ambassador to Egypt since the Gulf War. The two countries had kept their diplomatic ties at lower levels.
